The Best Dressed of the Oscars 2014

Was anyone else a little bored last night watching the red carpet? I’ve been looking forward to the Oscars since the award season began, hoping for something a little fresh and different, yet last night handed me no great surprises in the style department. Those women who always dress well did so but there were no outfits that filled me with dread or anything noteworthy so I’ve decided to leave worst-dressed out of today’s post. There were too many dresses that just bored me! However, the night wasn’t completely lacking – there were a few fabulous gowns by some of the usual suspects and of course, some funny moments that make the Oscars so much fun to follow.

I have left a couple of people off this list that people have been raving about – Jennifer Lawrence and Kerry Washington – for obvious reasons, I didn’t like their style. J-Law wore a beautiful Dior dress (surprise surprise) and she looked lovely but I’m getting so bored of the same look from her all the time and was hoping for something different. Kerry Washington’s maternity style was a miss this time and made her look a lot bigger than she is – not the aim when you’re pregnant, I imagine! Nonetheless, I have compiled a list of my favourites so enjoy and don’t forget to tell me your favourites!

Sandra Bullock in Alexander McQueen, Charlize Theron in Dior, Amy Adams in Gucci and Julie Roberts in Givenchy

Many of the Oscar dresses looked exactly the same, using light and airy shades of cream. However these ladies stepped out of the mould and chose dresses that were darker. The style of the dress is quite similar, however the cuts and fabrics made each starlet stand out. Sandra Bullock really won this award season with her style, from that green Lanvin gown at the SAG Awards to the Prabal Gurung colour-block number at the Golden Globes. This Alexander McQueen dress was no different and gave her a regal air. Charlize Theron was rightly named one of the best-dressed of the night in this fantastic Dior gown. In past years, she has taken to wearing John Galliano but this works and flatters every curve. By now, you’ll probably know I don’t like Amy Adams – however, her style choices this year have impressed me and this Gucci makes her figure look sensational. She lost out on the Best Actress gong along with Sandra Bullock but both won major style points. This Givenchy gown is phenomenal on Julia Roberts, who was up for Best Supporting Actress, and definitely gave me some dress envy. The colour, cut, fabric; everything was working here and her simple up-do finished the look off perfectly.

Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive, Kate Hudson in Atelier Versace, Jenna Dewan-Tatum in Reem Acra and Kristen Bell in Roberto Cavalli

There were so many similar dresses on the night, I found that the light-coloured dresses all blended into one. These ladies stood out for me because their style and confidence was just exceptional and there was something a little different about these gowns. Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett stunned in this elegant yet fun Armani Prive with floral embellishment. Her simple hairstyle and jewellery let the dress do the talking and it certainly did that! Kate Hudson looked phenomenal in this white Atelier Versace gown that flattered every curve and kept the critics talking about her. We all know Jenna Dewan-Tatum always has the best arm-candy in the form of Channing Tatum but this Reem Acra number let her stand out on her own and the dress is incredibly beautiful without being too much. Kristen Bell is always great entertainment and I love her and her husband Dax as a couple. Last night she impressed me in this fabulous Roberto Cavalli dress teamed with simple hair and make-up. Who’d have thought she just had a baby?

oscars 2014

Kristen Chenoweth in Roberto Cavalli and Emma Watson in Vera Wang

Metallics was a big trend on the red carpet this season but these are the only two metallic dresses I liked from the Oscars. Other A-Listers like Jessica Biel tried and – in my opinion – failed. Kristen Chenoweth looks gorgeous in this Roberto Cavalli gown (a popular designer this event) and managed to pull off metallic without looking like the Oscar statue. Her pixie cut and minimal jewellery gave this dress all the attention it needed – I wouldn’t have done anything different. I have so much love for Emma Watson and she cannot put a foot wrong when it comes to fashion. This Vera Wang is both classy and sexy, something that Emma seems to look for in a dress and always pulls it off!

Lupita Nyong’o in Prada

The deserving Best Supporting Actress winner was also the best dressed on the night. Lupita Nyong’o has been the talk of Hollywood this award season – both as a breakout star and a style icon. This being her first film role hasn’t phased her in the slightest and she has eased into the red carpet lifestyle with ease. This Prada gown follows in a long line of amazing designer gowns that she has made her own and the colour is beautiful against her dark skin tone. I probably would’ve left the hairband at home though.

Here are some of my favourite moments from the selfie seen round the world to Benedict Cumberbatch photobombing all of U2. Moments like this make the Oscars go from stuffy award ceremony to a party with a serious amount of fun!

The Selfie Seen Round The World

The most star-studded selfie you’ll ever see – tweeted by Ellen at the Oscars last night. This picture has now broken world records, being retweeted over two million times by last count! I want in on this!

These two presenting – because I want them to magically become a couple!

oscars 2014

Because Benedict Cumberbatch photobombing U2 was possibly the funniest thing ever!

And more photo-bombing from the gorgeous Jared Leto who also won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club.

These two being extremely cute – adorable couple alert. Also the picture below with Lupita really made me laugh!

Gorgeous photos like this make the Oscars for me. These portraits were taken at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party last night by photographer Mark Seliger and captured the essence of the Oscars in his pop-up studio. Check out some of his fantastic photographs here and look at how beautiful Zooey Deschanel and Lupita Nyong’o are!

Until next time,

Cannes Film Festival 2012: The Lowdown

Cannes is now over 😦 I’ve been following it throughout the week and some of you know I’ve already done a couple of posts during the week about the Cannes red-carpet style but its time to finish what I started and express my opinions on the best and worst dresses on the red-carpet the last week. There are some fabulous fashionable people like Jessica Chastain who can seem to do no wrong and then there are people like Freida Pinto who have people across the globe divided on their wardrobe choice. I’ve encouraged people to say their bit when it comes to the dresses at Cannes, I love to hear everyone’s opinions, just because I like it, doesn’t mean you will! There are some good, some bad and some baffling this year at the Film Festival and we can only wonder what some of these ladies (and maybe gentlemen!) are thinking!

Diane Kruger in Dior couture. I can’t seem to think straight when I see this dress so I don’t know if I have an opinion other than…’its very..lumpy’! She’s had a great week style-wise this year though so Kruger has to be commended for that!

Kylie Minogue looking spectacular in Roberto Cavalli. Say what you want about Minogue but she is an extremely strong and formidable woman and this dress suits her down to the ground!

Well, she could have smiled but this Marchesa gown is still stunning on Camilla Alves!

Reese Witherspoon looking absolutely adorable with her baby bump in Atelier Versace that makes her look radiant!

Two words: I want! Well done Lily Donaldson, you look breathtaking in this beautiful emerald gown

This Reem Acra dress is amazing, shame Kristen Stewart refuses to smile and maybe the hair should have been looser!

Nicole Kidman looks STUNNING in custom-made Lanvin, look at that detail at the back, truly amazing!

Natasha Poly had a bit of a hit and miss year in Cannes this year but she wins major points for this Emilio Pucci gown

For once I have no way to criticise Stewart, great outfit, hair brushed. Bravo, Kristen!

Yes, its Kruger again in a lovely custom-made Nina Ricci gown

Irina Shayk in Roberto Cavalli and a truckload of de Grisogono jewels

I cannot believe I’m about to criticise a supermodel but really, Karolina Kurkova, what are you thinking?!

My god, Berenice Marlohe, you have got the androgynous look down to a fine art!

Kelly Brook was someone I was not impressed with this year. Thought all her dresses looked cheap and for someone who has such an enviable figure, she didn’t dress to her full potential!

That’s about all the talent we’ve found in Cannes this year. Chastain and Kruger did a spectacular job whereas others didn’t do quite as good, and of course, Eva Longoria’s Marchesa dress will go down in history! What do you all think?

Day 2 of Cannes Film Festival 2012

Some time has passed in Cannes and its time to have another look and see what our favourite stars are wearing on the red carpet. With it only being the second full day, most of the stars that I featured in yesterdays post will feature again today as most other stars haven’t arrived yet. It was a beautiful day in Cannes and it brought the starlets and the red carpet style out in force with some stunning outfit choices. Have a look at what the fashionistas at the Cannes Film Festival had to offer today.

Freida Pinto looking fresh as a daisy in Salvatore Ferragamo…kinda makes you want to go on holiday!

Yet another gorgeous dress for Marion Cotillard, this time a lot more red-carpet worthy as always with Christian Dior

Eva Longoria in yet another beautiful dress, by Emilio Pucci this time. Although its not as show-stopping as her Marchesa gown, she is favouring her whites and metallics this year and looks all the better for it!

Jane Fonda looking ever better than the day before (if that were even possible!) in Stella McCartney

Yes its Freida Pinto again in a fabulous lime green Atelier Versace dress with the latest style accessory, a thigh high slit, the same as her Michael Angel dress.

Diane Kruger (again!) wearing Balmain and rocking those amazing heels

And yet again, Diane Kruger. Clearly her style is high class this year! Posing in a Calvin Klein Collection dress to the Women in Film party

Jessica Chastain looking cute as a button in polka dot Dolce and Gabbana

Jada Pinkett Smith looking fabulous in Versace

That’s all for the second day of Cannes but come back for a look in the next couple of days and see what the first weekend of Cannes has in store for us!

Opening Day of Cannes Film Festival 2012

There are few celebrity events besides Fashion Week that really make us fashion junkies sit up and pay heed to whoever has the best style on the red carpet. We have the Oscars every year, sometimes the Grammys, the Met Gala, these events are all important in the social calender but one event always stands out for its beautifully elegant fashion: the Cannes Film Festival. For many years, stars like Angelina Jolie, Marion Cotillard and Isla Fisher has delighted us with their stunning wardrobe choices and this year was no different. The festival., which opened yesterday will be running till the 27th and will no doubt have us gasping with awe every single day at the glamour and beauty of each event. So for this post, I’m going to go through my favourite outfits of the opening day of Cannes (I would include worst, but everyone so far has been on top form!). Have a look and see what your favourite stars are wearing and what you think of their glamorous style choices…

Diane Kruger in this beautiful Grecian Giambattista Valli mint dress for the opening ceremony

Berenice Bejo, who opened the ceremony, looked stunning in red Louis Vuitton at the Opening Night Dinner

Jessica Chastain looking very cute in Alexander McQueen, even if it is a bit pale for my taste!

Eva Herzigova, sparkling in a beautiful Dolce and Gabbana gown and Chopard jewellery

Yes its Diane Kruger again. I’m not a fan of lace-up dresses but Kruger pulls off this Versus dress like a pro!

Freida Pinto shook things up with a thigh high slit in her Michael Angel dress

Marion Cotillard in Christian Dior

Fan Bing Bing wearing a beautiful Christoper Bu gown

Last but not least, Eva Longoria in an amazing Marchesa gown that could well be the dress of Cannes 2012

So which one is your favourite?
